I thought I'd tell you a little about me. I grew up in a teaching family. My mom along
with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins were all teachers and so I saw firsthand all the
work and passion that goes into education. I however was
not as passionate about school. I have
dyslexia and it was a huge struggle to do the same things I saw others do with
ease. It would be wonderful to say
that a teacher saw through my struggles and encouraged me but I got really good
at disguising my symptoms and just work harder to look average. Math was one area that seemed to come more naturally and though I
couldn't memorize things as easily it clicked a lot more for me.
Years later I went to Wayland Baptist University and wanted to go
into accounting, knowing for sure that I would NEVER go into education. The longer I went and the more I sought God's will for me the more
I knew that education was the path I needed to take. I told God on no uncertain terms that he made a mistake. Four years later I graduated with a degree in elementary
education. I love God's sense of humor!
For ten years I taught 1st grade in a wonderful low income
school. Let me just say that there are
much easier places to work but it was so rewarding. Many of my students and parents were like me, doing all that they
could but just surviving. I hope that I
saw them for who they were and encourage and inspired them! I do know that they had my heart. Then I got my
next challenge teaching 5th grade math. I felt I
could teach the content but wasn't sure about teaching students who were taller
than me. It was a struggle but I loved
getting to teach math all day long and having the opportunity to tell all my
kids "You are gifted in math. It may not be
in the same way as your classmates, but you bring something to class that no one
else can." Seeing students really
struggle in math made me realize that some of them struggle like I struggled
but in a different area. Then I was on a mission to
teach conceptually and try to reach all my students.
Now I a starting new
adventure as a math interventionist. I keep
praying that I can impart my love for math in a exciting way and help students
understand the why's of math.
